From “done” to “comeback”
“Have you ever felt like you're one bad break away from being counted out?”
Oof, too many times.
I was thinking about a team I worked with a few years ago.
They’d become a sort of second-chance haven for people other teams had given up on.
Literally on the verge of being cut.
Or fired multiple times.
Thinking, "I'm probably done this time too."
One was even asked if he wanted to “try something new” because his old team saw no path back for him.
Basically, they were at rock bottom in their careers.
Doubt was a constant companion.
Then an unexpected call.
A new environment.
A belief from someone higher up.
And what happened?
This team is crushing it now.
After thinking their careers were over.
And being let go by other teams.
They posted career AND org highs together.
They cameback.
The change of scenery.
Reigniting that internal fire.
Rebuilding their mental fortitude.
And shifting their perspective when the pressure was immense.
Transforming "I thought I was done …"
… into "I've still got a lot to offer."
Seeing these turnarounds reminds me so much of the purpose I feel doing this work.
That moment when someone I’ve come to know and care about rediscovers their strength after facing massive setbacks.
It's just so powerful to me.
They didn't suddenly get new talent.
We unlocked what was always there.
Often buried under doubt or past failures.
And isn’t this what coaching is supposed to be about?
Here’s to the second-chance + what you do with it.
